Spectacular part of Australia, red desert landscapes, Uluru (Ayers Rock) and vast spaces. Northern Territory is a federal territory in the centre and central northern region of Australia. The capital city of the Northern Territory is Darwin, which is home more than half of the state’s 229,675 residents. Brisbane, the jumping off point for trains to the Outback, is the wonderful and vibrant capital city of Queensland. Also in the state are the Great Barrier Reef and Cape York Penninsula, northernmost point in Australia, and off the coast, Thursday Island.
Wine and opals! There are vineyards throughout the southern part of South Australia. Built along the River Torrens, the capital city, Adelaide, has many attractions. Coober Pedy, in the hot interior, is a not to be missed place famous for opals and housing underground.
I love Tassie! It is a miniature New Zealand as far as its variety of physical beauty. I did two of the best treks anywhere, Cradle Mountain and The Bay of Fires walk. Tasmania is an island state, part of the Commonwealth of Australia, located 240 kilometres to the south of the Australian continent, separated by Bass Strait. Population in 2012 was 512,100.
Home to Melbourne, sister city to Boston, and the Australian Open. Over the course of many trips there, we have made dear friends in Melbourne and enjoyed travels along the coast. Victoria is a state in the south-east of Australia. Geographically the smallest mainland state. The most densely populated of Australian states, Victoria in 2012 had a population of 5,603,100.
Larger than Europe, with the capital city, Perth, the most isolated important city in the world, Western Australia is a vast, amazing place. It occupies the entire western third of Australia. It is bounded by the Indian Ocean to the north and west and the Great Australian Bight and Southern Ocean to the south-east. Australia’s largest state with a total land area of 2,529,875 sq kms (976,790 sq mi) is the second-largest country subdivision in the world.In 2012 the population was only 2,410,600, most of whom live in the south-west corner of the state.
